Empowering Women: SDG5 and Her Abilities
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations member states in 2015 act as a blueprint to reach a better and more sustainable future for all.
The 5th goal addresses Gender Equality. Despite the fact that women have and continue to achieve remarkable accomplishments while making up half of the world's population, few are often recognized or given opportunities to enact change in comparison to their male counterparts.
Women with disabilities in developing countries face additional obstacles in obtaining support and recognition.
One of the ways Light for the World is making an effort to reach this Sustainable Development Goal is by putting the spotlight on remarkable women with disabilities from around the world who are achieving impressive milestones through the Her Abilities Award.
What is the Her Abilities award?
Her Abilities is the first global award honouring women with disabilities who have achieved greatness in their life or field of work. It is a pioneering initiative, launched in 2018 by Light for the World along with Right Livelihood Award winner Yetnebersh Nigussie.
With this award, we aim to honour women with disabilities.
The disability rights activist and Light for the World advisor, Yetnebersh Nigussie, is a key spokesperson for Her Abilities.
